About TACOE

OUR MISSION

The Tampa Area Center of Excellence (TACOE) is one of 10 community-based Florida pre-college Centers under the auspices of the Florida Education Fund (FEF).

Established in 1985, the Centers of Excellence (COE's or Centers) mission is to identify and then prepare and motivate underserved elementary and secondary students to pursue and succeed in higher education. TACOE students and their parents are a part of FEF's statewide pre-college network.

Project Title

National Achievers Society (NAS)

NAS aims to increase the pool of underserved students who are prepared, motivated and qualified to enter higher education. NAS meets this goal by implementing a group achievement model for its members that rewards and focuses on the importance of academic excellence and a strong community-centered work ethic, while reducing the negative peer pressure associated with academic achievement. Since 1985, NAS has enjoyed success in developing and nurturing a culture of expected achievement that turns learners into leaders.

Project Title

Brain Bowl Competitions

Each year, TACOE holds local and regional Brain Bowl competitions and takes regional winners to the statewide Brain Bowl championships hosted by FEF each Spring. The competitions motivate students to improve academic skills outside traditional classrooms. Students compete in Math, History & Culture, NAS Codes App Building, NAS Voices Speechwriting and Oration, Laws of Life Essay Writing, and Word Definition ("Word Wizard"). State senior high Math, History & Culture, and NAS Voices winners compete for scholarships to Florida colleges and universities.

Project Title

Academic Enrichment Centers

All year, TACOE supplements student learning experiences through tutoring and standardized test preparation both at community venues and online. Each summer, TACOE hosts a six-week Summer Enrichment Program in Hillsborough County, where students sharpen core academic skills; learn to code; explore art; engage in character development, fitness, and safety activities; and take educational field trips to venues such as Microsoft, Croc Encounters, Hillsborough Community College, the University of South Florida, MOSI, and the Tampa Museum of Art.
